My Husband Watches Too Much Football And Other Sports

Monday Night Football is the bane of my existence. Every week my husband settles into his favorite chair for at least three straight hours of football. This week I want things to be different. Any advice on how I can entice him away from watching his favorite sport? How can I deal with my husband’s football obsession?

I can certainly relate to your situation, except that my husband is obsessed with golf, a sport that, at the very least, gets him outside for exercise and fresh air. It must be especially hard to be married to a couch-potato sports fan. And every Monday night, for goodness sake!

You have to tell your husband how you feel – don’t assume he knows you’re upset. Chances are he isn’t purposely ignoring you. He just looks forward to his football-watching marathon. He likely considers it as much a part of his regular routine as I do cooking dinner.

This week plan an outing to tear him away from the television. Football may be exciting, but so is a romantic evening. Book the coziest table at a local restaurant or spend Monday night at a local sports bar, munching on pretzels and peanuts and playing pool. Appeal to the sportsman in him. Just make sure that he keeps his back to the TV.

Tell him that you’d like to start every week together. And because marriage is about compromise, offer to have his friends over to watch the Monday night game once a month.
